‘Hurt Me’ is the first cut to be lifted from the forthcoming long player by London newcomer Holly Walker. A measured, beautifully produced three minutes that showcases Walker’s subtle vocal abilities over a textured, jazz flecked backing.
A classically trained pianist by trade, Walker first came to prominence just four months ago as the voice (and co-writer) of Maribou State’s woozy late night jam ‘Tongue’. On ‘Hurt Me’, the direction takes a gentle shift in favour of Bristolian trip-hop territories from the early nineties. So much so in fact, come the song’s lingering exit notes, you’d be forgiven any unwarranted urge to dig out those old joss sticks that you’ve harbouring since University.
