Listen: HOCKEYSMITH – Now I Want To
‘Now I Want To’ is the debut track from sisterly duo, HOCKEYSMITH. Or at least we think it is.
Information on this Cornwall outfit is sparse to say the least but rumour has it, they’ve been a band since 2011 in various incarnations, playing gigs around Brighton with the likes of Tyrannosaurus Dead and Bleeding Knees Club.
With all the hearsay – apparently they were members of the UK under-18 hockey team, hence the name – all we really have to go off is the one track. And what a track. Flitting between tangled droning electronica and swooning shoegaze from one second to the next, ‘Now I Want To’ ropes in prickly 808s and churning synthesizers to achieve a truly idiosyncratic sound. Punctuated by the sisters’ beautifully floaty harmonies; you can file HOCKEYSMITH right next to Julianna Barwick in your collection.
