Listen: Giana Factory – Pixelated Truth (Autolux Remix)
Autolux have remixed Giana Factory’s ‘Pixelated Truth’, as part of a series of remixes done by friends of the band, adding a sinister static depth to the moody electro-noir. Beginning with what sounds like a sombre and desperate dialing-tone, the shuffling acoustic drums suddenly add a breathless sense of urgency. All sulky, clipped vocals – like human cries lost in a vast electronic landscape – the track feels like the troubled communication between man and machine. The lyrics too, which tell of the simple facts of virtual life in a computer game, only make more obvious the truth that real life is not made up of such simple things.
Interestingly, it is the computer-generated noises that add a human unpredictability to this track – the acoustic-sounding drums act more like a programmed metronome beat, providing a constant machine-like propulsion, and the monotonic vocals sound at times as if they’re being sung by a sad robot. It is that sense of subverting expectation in which computer and life imitate each other and meld together, that sums up Giana Factory’s approach to music making – they are named after a computer game after all.
The end of the track feels like the quiet culmination of everything that came before – an electronic heartbeat fading into oblivion. Is it a natural sound manipulated by electronic means, or a synthetic sound mimicking a human heart? Like the title, the song is a musical oxymoron – both synthesised and genuine, virtual and real, pixelated and truthful.
Both the original track and remix will be released as a 7″ and download this week. ‘Pixelated Truth’ is taken from Giana Factory’s album Save The Youth, which will be released in the Autumn.
