While Fryars’ previous results were somewhat scattergun, as owners of 2009 debut LP Dark Young Hearts will testify, something seemed to have clicked into place at the back end of last year when Garrett returned to the fore with a brace of languid R&B tinted pop tracks, ‘Love So Cold’ and ‘In Your Arms’.
A vital shot of personality and verve had been injected into Fryars’ new sound and the invigoration continues in 2013 with the unveiling of new single ‘On Your Own’. Reflective lyrics rolled out in Garrett’s idiosyncratic tongue, the delivery evokes a genuine sense of isolation; the difference is you actually want to empathize with him this time around.
The disconsolate whines of guitar and tenderly repeating piano chords add further emotional bite to the arrangement, indicating that this latest incarnation of Fryars is the most melodically and altruistically refined yet.
‘On Your Own’ is out on 13 May via 679 with a new album following later this year.
