Listen: Empty Pools – “Medium Wave” [Premiere]
Taken from their forthcoming debut album Saturn Reruns, due out on 4 November via Battle Worldwide, Bristol four-piece Empty Pools have revealed their latest cut in “Medium Wave.”
A typically sparse but wonderfully complex instrumental backdrop provides the perfect launch pad for singer Leah’s snarling vocals and erudite lyrics, which she tells us are “supposed to be an alternate reality “I Knew You Were Trouble. The “Medium Wave” protagonist takes advice from that song and goes with their gut in a subsequent relationship situation” she continues “letting any perceived ‘trouble’ destroy everything before it even starts. The choruses are the revenge fantasy where she does get f-cked over but does not take it lying down.”
“It was written shortly before we played shows with Menomena last November, Aaron believes the outro riff was a direct result of Ben having recently seen Blur live. Its working title was “Hommeage” because it had a real stoner rock vibe. I’m not sure what vibe the recording has but live it’s quite sassy. Matt famously (famously within Empty Pools) introduced this one at our last London show with this nugget, “This one’s sassy, so you can shake your ass-y!” He had not said much on-stage up until that point.”
