Created from the ashes of Desolation Wilderness – a criminally overlooked quartet from Olympia, Washington who disbanded in 2010 after two full length albums (New Universe and White Light Strobing) – Drone Ranger is a new project by Wilderness front man Nicolaas Zwart that sees the hazy shoegaze of yore replaced with a more immediate (albeit lo-fi) pop sensibility, awash with computer game glitches and bontempi charm.
A couple of tracks showed up online last year, with ‘Daughter Of A Rich Man’ being accompanied by a rather stunning video. It’s this brand new re-rub of TLC’s signature tune ‘No Scrubs’ that’s really sparked our attention though. With the pace slowed down and the memorable acoustic guitar lick of the original replaced with swathes of analogue synth and cavernous reverb, we’re left with a late night slow jam that sits comfortably amongst the flock of intelligent RnB remakes currently flooding the blogosphere.
