Listen: Denitia & Sene - "side fx."
This new track from Brooklyn duo Denitia & Sene is a nicely syncretic mix of scuzzy noise punk and smart, angular synthpop. There's something in these two disparate things coming together, something in the avant-garde leanings of both sounds, in the aesthetics and stylised representations of each, that fits it like a dreamy pair of jeans.
This mixology is chronic with the duo, previous efforts bristling with sharply cosmic RnB (e.g. "divided.") as much as with electro hip hop sensibilities (as in "feel better.") – each one a seamless exploration of new sounds and pop vocals.
"side fx." is no different in this sense, but of course in following a different stylistic tack it stands out. Towering charges of screaming guitar reach pinnacles of ear-satisfying overdrive, the bass squelches with mean authority to the simple electro beat of the drums, synth melody flutters overhead in faded flocks of retro-appreciation – all from the Sene side of things. Add silken pop vocals, courtesy of Denitia, and you have yourself something vaguely Drive-inspired (what retro-sounding electro isn't), yet wholly its own unique being.
Denitia & Sene's lastest track is taken from the upcoming side fx. EP, out in the near future thanks to UK radio station/label Rinse (FM) and Red Bull Sound Select.
