Listen: Coves - "Big Jet Plane (Angus and Julia Stone cover) [Premiere]
Indie-pop duo Coves have covered Angus and Julie Stone's "Big Jet Plane" from 2010 LP Down The Way as part of the Nettwerk 30th birthday compilation.
From Cover To Cover: 30 Years At Nettwerk, is a "celebration of Nettwerk’s 30th anniversary", and is released 26 January. It's compiled in reverse chronological order by release year, and sees the current Nettwerk roster tackle a few of Nettwerk's most popular songs over the past three decades.
Coves turn Angus and Julia Stone's "Big Jet Plane" from a laidback, summer-zephyr affair, peppered with Kings Of Leon-isms, and add a deranged, surftronica twist. It's no longer the wispy, lovelorn cut it once was; Coves don't necessarily make it evil, but they sure make it a darnsight more sleazy. Lascivious, syrupy guitars lure shimmering beats into dens of inequity - when Coves sing "I'm gonna hold you, I'm gonna kiss her in my arms/I'm gonna take you away from home..." it's less romantic elope, more 'point of no return'. Sublimely shadowy.
