Listen: Citizens! - "Waiting For Your Lover" [Premiere]
It's been radio silence for the past few years from the good Citizens!, but they're back with more energy than ever on this latest single.
"Waiting for Your Lover" runs along with all the action of an '80s montage, full of ambition and energy and maybe a little bit of manic misbehaviour. Produced by George Reid of AlunaGeorge - himself no stranger to throwback inspo - the song has the gusto of a bygone era with a distinctly Citizens! spin. Meaning it's bound to rouse and empower, to start or end your night, but most importantly, it's a track that's going to make you dance.
Reid, along with Aluna Francis, and Citizens! recently rocked Brazil's MECA Festival - you can find out more about it here.
Nearly four years since Here We Are, "Waiting for Your Lover" finds Citizens! both recognizable and transformed. The energetic ethos is the same, but the sound of the new single is bigger, more expansive. As if not only you but the music itself just ran through that bigger-better-faster-stronger Hollywood studio sequence. This can only bode well for their upcoming full length.
Says lead singer Tom Burke, "Everything is at the limit on this record. Big guitar, bold chords, shouting and wailing. It's like the positivity is popping out the top of your head. Stop crying into your beer! Just drink the thing and get on with your life! Or at least write a song about someone who has! Maybe we're only indulging in the fantasy that we might one day sort our lives out but whatever- at least you can dance to it."
Of the single itself, Burke is referential and wry about its inspiration: "We channelled the moving-on energies of Lindsay Buckingham for this song. We split into two couples and all broke-up the day we went into the studio. The song came out great but don't ask about me and Lawrence right now. I'm not ready."
European Soul will be released 13 April on Kitsune/Sony Red.
Citizens! play London's XOYO on 16 April.
