Listen: Brandt Brauer Frick – Broken Pieces (Mouse on Mars Technopromisis remix)
Neither Jamie Lidell or the boys in Brandt Brauer Frick seem particularly keen on doing things traditionally. So fittingly, Lidell’s two guest slots on the latter’s album from March this year were stand out cuts, with his lean, soulful vocal wrapping perfectly around the twisting concert hall techno of the German trio. Where the original track throbbed on the muscle of the subterranean bass and thick brass stabs, this remix lets in some refreshing rays of light on an otherwise dark record.
It’s introduced by the “dulcet” tones of a sat nav, “calcuting route”. It very quickly takes a pretty panoramic one, as Lidell’s warped vocal sample practically takes off, as if whizzed round a zero gravity flight simulator. It’s a remix with a short attention span, breaking stop-startedly from the swagger of its simplified clubby pulse into moments of lush electronica, letting the vocals really sing. It revels in its technicolour play, flying defiantly in the face of Brandt Brauer Frick’s stubbornly organic approach.
