Listen: Blood Cultures – “Mercury Child”
On second single “Mercury Child”, New Jersey’s anonymous Blood Cultures once again let the synths speak for themselves.
And speak they do. After a relatively subdued beginning, the track kicks in to high gear with a bass line somewhat reminiscent of MGMT’s “Electric Feel”. From that point forward, the listener enters a druggy jungle of synths. While a distorted approximation of a horn dances throughout and serves as a de facto hook, multiple listens will reward those willing to parse out the layers of individual parts, examining the trees that fill this extraordinary musical forest.
Blood cultures are, in the medical sense, used to test for infectious agents in the body; it’s appropriate, then, that Blood Cultures make music that will stick with you long after the song ends.
