Listen: Blaue Blume – On New Years Eve
Copenhagen’s Blaue Blume draw their name from the German translation of ‘blue flower’.
A romantically symbolic choice from the Danish four-piece whose solitary band photo – featuring the tall, effortlessly coiffed troupe gazing thoughtfully into the camera lens – could quite easily be interchanged with promotional material for toffee nosed reality series Made In Chelsea. They’ve got the look, no doubt. And on the basis of debut drop ‘On New Years Eve’ alone, they’ve got bags of talent in reserve.
The blue flower is emblematic of the quest for the infinite, striving for unreachable goals. A notion reflected in Jonas Smith’s gut wrenching vocal which bends and refracts almost to breaking point. Plumbing the depths of the soul with a solemn baritone one moment; tracing a delicate falsetto around wisps of cloud the next. With so many vibrant vocal textures at play it’s easy to overlook the wandering, reverb laced guitar shuffles and scattered percussion twinkling in the background. Fatalist indie pop has seldom sounded so beautiful, so cathartic.
