Listen: Absolutely Free - "Beneath The Air"
It’s a wondrous thing to feel that you’re soaring and standing still at the same time, particularly without chemical assistance. It’s a hallmark of psych-rock and a trick turned to dazzling effect by Toronto trio Absolutely Free on the latest single from their upcoming self-titled debut LP.
Clocking in at “just” the 4 minute range, “Beneath The Air” retains the headiness of early singles but proves decidedly leaner and charmingly less demanding. Quickly blossoming from a compressed, mantra-like drum pattern, glimmering synth accents add an air of exquisite whimsy to the proceedings not unlike fellow Canadian, Caribou.
The kicker is the cloudburst moment just prior to the midway point that, belying the song’s sub-stratospheric title, is akin to that point when your passenger plane breaks through the dense, turbulent layer of cloud into the boundless and perpetual blue.
