Let’s Away reveal "Control", their darkest, most empowering indie-rock cut to date
“You are in control/you are in control” Let’s Away urge their listener with something of a false sense of security. There feels as much doubt as there is conviction in the delivery, and throughout “Control” we’re ever-so-slightly on edge. It’s utterly brilliant.
The enigmatic duo - childhood friends from the North East, now based in London and Manchester respectively - have today revealed this third track from their Sky On Fire singles series, recorded between Leeds and the capital by James Mottershead (British Sea Power, Sundara Karma, S.C.U.M) and released on their own label of the same name. And it’s their darkest, most empowering British indie-rock cut to date.
From its crunching, The National / Interpol-esque bassline opening, “Control” builds with increasing ferocity into a blistering finale as typically gorgeous guitar tones - this time showing-off heavier inclinations with a proper indie-rock riff - wind above rambunctious drum work before the introduction of a chilling, melancholic piano line adds to the powerful, atmospheric unease.
If “Golden Morning” was the band’s awakening and "Tour Of The Stars" their statement of intent, this latest effort is them striding defiantly, albeit not without creating a clever subtextual caution, towards the serious indie world they deserve to inhabit. Premiering below, Let’s Away are in “Control”.
