Leeds supergroup Living Body make a heavenly racket as they cover "All I Want For Christmas Is You"
Leeds-based indie supergroup Living Body have shared a haunting-yet-heartwarming rendition of Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You".
Carey's candy-coated classic gets a tender embrace from Living Body - it's not a gimmicky piss-take or some kinda of outlandish rollercoaster of noise, but rather a stripped-back ode that takes the original to its warm core. The twinkles and sparkles are replaced by organic magic, and the tsunamis of glee part for clattering bouts of percussion. Living Body haven't totally ripped up the rulebook, but this a welcome addendum that rekindles the Christmas spirit.
The group features Jeff T. Smith (fka Juffage), with a cast of collaborators including Katie Harkin (Sky Larkin, Sleater-Kinney, Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, Wild Beasts, Flock Of Dimes), Tom Evans (Vessels), Alice Rowan (Mayshe-Mayshe), and Sarah Statham (Esper Scout), and this December they've banded together to take on one of the biggest Christmas belters of all time.
"Katie and Tom are a couple of the first people I met when I moved to Leeds from Chicago," Smith recently told The Skinny. "Katie actually came to the first show I played in Leeds, after moving here, at the Brudenell Social Club (though I didn't know it at the time). Tom plays in both Vessels and Living Body, and plays a guitar on the original recording of 'Last Few True'. At some point after this, Katie eventually collaborated with Vessels on their new LP. So, this all feels pretty self-contained and none of this would have happened if I hadn't met these people. And where does one thing end and another begin? We've
all worked on each others songs in some capacity now..."
The track will be packaged with a Vessels rework of Living Body's "Last Few True" as a charity 7" looking to raise money for the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Center of BC in Vancouver.
