Listen: LAYLA - "Weightless" [Premiere]
LAYLA is one of those artists that hasn’t so much emerged as has exploded, having made everybody sit up and take notice when she released the luscious "Smokestacks" back in March. It was a track full of rich textures, gliding orchestration and a bombastic climax that all worked perfectly with her icy vocals - a track that made many, myself included, sit back in awe. After the release of her last EP, Black Mud, in April follows the title track from her upcoming EP, Weightless: another fantastic slice of LAYLA’s beguiling pop.
The singer has once again captured that world of swirling emotions, flicking from joy and euphoria to sorrow and reflection the next. Packed with yet more crescendos, led by the beautifully sweeping violins and marching percussion that threatens to erupt with the sheer weight of emotion, "Weightless" is yet more of the captivating same.
With her voice having developed even more (a haunting quality that's even more prominent and impossible not to fall in love with) LAYLA builds upon the already wonderful base she started with on "Smokestacks" to create ever more impressive soundscapes with each track.
Of the EP, LAYLA said: “The Weightless EP explores the moments before you spill into that all too rare sensation of being completely free... when you're brimming with so much energy, love, happiness or confidence that you are floating. It's difficult to stay deliriously euphoric so I tried to bottle that feeling in music...”
Weightless, from which this track is taken, is released on 10 November, with a show at The Lexington, London on 3 November.
