Charming and authentic, Lav shows her insecurities in new single “The Girls Before Me”
Following on from sensual single “Wavvy”, Los Angeles-based artist Lav is back with silky new cut “The Girls Before Me”.
Worthy of the hype that’s been circulating since her debut “From Me, The Moon” - her breakout single that’s garnered the adoration of many, including one Billie Eilish - Lav continues to ignite industry attention with poetic new release “The Girls Before Me”.
Consumed by the relatable anguish that embroils many when falling for someone, the 21-year-old songwriter effortlessly places herself in a position of knowing as she illustrates her past experiences in this raw new cut. Lav perfectly unravels this sentiment of doubt with her lucid lyrics, a testament to her songwriting abilities; she makes her experiences tangible and shared and paints her picture with ease.
Soft instrumentation and dreamlike production allow Lav’s vocals to shine as her tender tones become the driving force behind “The Girls Before Me”. Masterfully bending the track to her will, her smooth vocal harmonies glide over her audience; opening with sublime electric guitar that frequents throughout, a grounding kick drum and other flecks of percussion adds scope to Lav's unmistakable sound.
Teaming up again with director Marielle Boland for another beautiful marriage of ideas, Lav crafts a lo-fi dream of a lyric video as the whimsical scenery provides a stunning backdrop to the soothing production that engulfs “The Girls Before Me”. With a string of sultry, downtempo singles that hark back to old Hollywood, the future appears bright for this enigmatic talent.
Speaking on “The Girls Before Me” Lav explains, “The song was written out of a deep insecurity of constantly comparing myself to past loves. Always wondering if when they look at you, they’re recalling just staring into a paper maché they’ve built up of a before lover” explains Lav of “The Girls Before Me”. "Most of the time it’s all in our heads, and in this case it definitely was, however that didn’t make it any less real or painful to feel.
"The video is an avant-garde picnic scene packed full of toys and scandal,” Lav continues, referencing the new visuals. "I love working with Marielle because she really helps my campy visions come to life. The video is a lot less emotional than the mood I got into while writing, and I think that makes the whole image more palatable, but also I loved to dress up and have a picnic with a bear and some snails.”
