Irish singer/songwriter LAOISE has released the colourful “Seriously?”, the closing track from her Mad EP, out earlier this week.
A real highlight in a concise package of multi-coloured bubblegum pop, “Seriously” has a clear message delivered through spotless production and glimmering synth tones. It's a song of unrequited love, as LAOISE navigates conflicting emotions to the sound of pure poppy beats. Since emerging just over two years ago, the Galway artist has been on a steady ascent - the 22 year old has a clear understanding of melody and hook, and applies this knowledge with admirable ambition.
The accompanying video is self-described as a colourful look inside the mind of LAOISE. Speaking on the track, she notes: “'Seriously?' is about that feeling when you really, really like someone and you don’t know how tell them but you keep dropping hints and they don’t pick up on them and you’re like ‘seriously?’
“It actually made me think about the first time I liked a girl, and she just thought we were just really close friends! When I was writing it, it was the middle of the winter and the weather was horrible, but I kept imagining the feeling of summer and what that would sound like in a song. To me, it feels like driving down a highway with the top down, mixed with the taste of fruit punch and the smell of sun cream. It’s the feeling you have when you’re not worrying about anything other [than] someone liking you back, which I think is something we’ve all felt, especially when we’re younger and carefree.”
With the release of this video, both songwriter and fanbase looks towards the future as new music is promised on the horizon. Producing and releasing independently, this young artist is a shining example of 2019’s pop, and her trajectory looks incredibly promising.
