Watch: Land Observations - "On Leaving The Kingdom For The Well-Tempered Continent"
Land Observations is the personal and hyper-detailed project brought by James Brooks, formerly member of Appliance.
It developed along with Brooks’ interest and practise into visual art and a natural merging of minimalism and guitars into a beautifully spartan union, producing firstly the Roman Roads EP and sequentially a debut longplayer Roman Roads IV-XI.
In Brooks’ work there’s also a keen and loving attentiveness to detail, as if the effort is not simply creative but also investigative. The Grand Tour - his new album out next month - looks to be one of topographical ilk, with the “grand tour” through Europe of the wealthy British neo-classicist as the main source of inspiration. Brooks takes on his personal experience and the one of others, using postcards as the basis of the album’s artwork.
Brooks has unveiled “On Leaving The Kingdom For The Well Tempered Continent”, the album opener, along with its stunning visuals. The landscape clearly seems to direct each undulation and modulation of the guitars and sparse instrumentation, developing soundscapes full of breadth and seemingly climactic changes. Directed by Phil Coy, the clip recreates this ethereal start of a journey by depicting the various stops in between London and the English Channel. Chugging along and harmoniously arpeggiating, the guitars, along with the breathtaking view, will set off the listener to the journey of a lifetime. Watch below.
Brooks will perform at London’s Rough Trade East on 30 July. The Grand Tour is released on 28 July via Mute.
