L.A. Caseley debuts with the poetry-inspired soul of “WCSBF”
“WCSBF” (“We Could Still Be Friends”, for the uninitiated) is the debut single from Kentish Town newcomer L.A. Caseley.
“WCSBF” is a mature debut influenced by years of exposure to traditional Portuguese Fado music, along with the writing and poetry of - amongst others - JD Salinger and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The result is a breezy, soulful cut with a silky, decadent feel to it. Tinkling keys and liberal smatterings of double bass add a retro feel despite clipped electronic percussion, whilst Caseley’s voice is warm and butter-rich throughout.
“‘WCSBF’ is about the experience of loving someone and feeling fated to them, but simultaneously knowing and accepting that you can't be with them any longer,” Caseley explains candidly of the track. “The irony of saying 'we can still be friends,’ when at the core of it you both know it's not true. It's about the desire to keep a friendship with them to remain close, even though you're falling apart and further away from each other.”
“We sometimes lie to ourselves to be happy, and I felt that ‘WCSBF’ was one of those I had experienced, and maybe others had too.”
