The new video from Cardiff’s post-punk trio Kutosis marks a departure from the band’s punchier back catalogue. “Crystal Beach” is an enigmatic journey to the Welsh mountains with uplifting indie-rock as its score, which you can see here first at Best Fit.
Set in the Brecon Beacons and directed by Ryan Owen Eddleston, “Crystal Beach” depicts a group (though it’s hard to determine, at times, their relationship) on a hedonistic camping trip. Its hungover, pale hues slowly warm as the campers ingest a mescaline-esque brew, where barriers are broken and tolerance is pushed. Neither we nor seemingly the protagonist know what to think the next day as the nippy yet perversely endearing cold Welsh weather returns.
Those familiar with the band’s Welsh Music Prize-nominated debut album, Fanatical Love, with its post-hardcore energy and rawness, may be slightly surprised at the softer textures of the track, which at times isn’t too distant from the likes of Real Estate or The Subways. No doubt it will add variety to their heated live show; those near to their native Cardiff can see the trio play Clwb Ifor Bach on 7 June.
The band also play the Old Fire Station, Stoke Newington, London on 6 June. Dream It Away is released 2 June via Jealous Lovers Club.
