Listen: Kidnap Kid – “Like You Used To”
Sheffield’s Matt Relton, AKA Kidnap Kid, continues a strong run of single releases with “Like You Used To”, the second half of a double A-side also featuring “Stronger”.
A slow burn more reminiscent of, say, the music of The xx than the dark house odyssey on the other side of the record, “Like You Used To” builds tension with spare two-note guitar lines, a sensual female vocal, and the occasional drum clatter for emphasis. As the bass pops and teases, the beat hammers its way to a climactic chorus that is both melancholic and imminently danceable.
Kidnap Kid will be playing an Amplified Session in Portsmouth 16 March before heading out on a UK tour in April with Clean Bandit.
