Karl X Johan return with their first single in three years in the shape of the bouncing "Twisted Up"
We've not heard from Swedish duo Karl X Johan since 2014, breaking their tradition of one single per year, but they're back with a brand new track today.
Kalle Jönson and Johan Tuvesson's last track was the '80s referencing "A Better Tomorrow" so it's something of a surprise to hear the go-slow Swedes take on tropical rhythms and dancehall on "Twisted Up".
There's still some gleaming synthpop in here, but there's a lot bouncing bass, autotuned vocals and skipping beats which suggest Karl X Johan have taken some inspiration from the likes of Major Lazer. While all this suggests an upbeat summer vibe, there's still an air of sadness in the vocals which keeps "Twisted Up" connected to the duo's electronic roots.
"We've made a lot of music since 'A Better Tomorrow' in 2014. Or a lot of different versions of a few songs to be exact," Karl X Johan tell us. "That's how we usually work. Always setting out to make a great departure from our previous single and slowly frustrating ourselves in not being able to fully realize a vision. But then from time to time we get it right. It's sad that we only end up with one finished song after so many hours, days, weeks and years. But we take what we can get. Getting it right once in a while is still worth it. So here's some Koh Phangan beach party music for you.
We still don't know if this new release means an album could finally be on the way, but at the very least it's a song that breathes new life into Karl X Johan's steady approach.
