Kakkmaddafakka bares all on new slice “Naked Blue”
Norwegian sextet Kakkmaddafakka impress on striking and sophisticated indie-pop “Naked Blue”.
“Naked Blue” is the dream-laden first offering lifted from their forthcoming fifth studio album, and it notably sees Kakkmaddafakka evolve with an admirable progression in songwriting maturity. Meticulously layered instrumentation rests against a carefree steady beat, as the vocals of front man Axel Vindenes soar fluently. It’s a much fuller, more natural sound than previous efforts: a shift in direction that should play out favourably with its accessibility.
Gliding transitions play a pivotal role in ensuring no momentum is lost; it’s these subtle changes that maintain the alluring energy that inspires so much affection. Although at its core “Naked Blue” is a simple indie-pop song that doesn’t reinvent the wheel, its spirited and infectious melodies are undeniable, and the structure and dynamics are harnessed with finesse.
“It was one of those songs that only took five minutes to write,” say the group. “The weather in Bergen this spring and summer made us uber-creative. I was laying on the balcony boiling and dreaming in the sun. Out of nowhere I felt the urge to go inside and play guitar. Five minutes later I had the song.”
The lead single is said to largely be indicative of what to expect from the album, and themes are centred around “relationships, tales from Bergen and mental health”. Produced by Matias Tellez (Young Dreams), the band also proclaim the record to be the most intimate and honest album they’ve done to date.
