Dubliner JyellowL takes us on a twisted trip with “Mademoiselle”
The third track taken from his forthcoming LP 2020 D/VISION, Nigeria-born, Ireland-raised JyellowL displays his boundless versatility on “Mademoiselle”.
JyellowL cultivates a truly rare sound, bolstering Ireland's flourishing alt-rap scene with another new track. The sinister beat on “Mademoiselle” somewhat juxtaposes its heartfelt message of a testament to those who've helped the young rapper get where he is today.
“The song is about prioritising what and who really is important to you after a tiresome experience of trying to please everyone,” says JyellowL. “It’s about giving roses to your role models, inspirations and loved ones while they’re around to smell them.”
Piano chords build a malevolently intense atmosphere for JyellowL to drive, then almost playfully he orchestrates a beat and dominates the track with a tantalising flow. Just when you start to think the track has reached its peak, overarching vocals from Chris Kabs take over, deftly contrasting chords from Beethoven’s “Für Elise” (also famously sampled by Nas).
The kind of assertiveness and self-assuredness that’s displayed on the track is reflective of the 21-year-old rapper's strong-willed nature – it’s important to mention that his upcoming debut LP is to be released on his own newly-established label, JyellowL Records Ltd.
After already hitting dizzy heights on his breakthrough single “Ozone” which starred on the FIFA 20 soundtrack, and “Oh Lawd” which was cherry-picked for TV series Normal People, JyellowL’s rich potential given the free reign of a whole album is illimitable.
“The album is being pieced together conceptually by each single that’s been released so far,” he says, “each one explores a unique dimension of the album, this is the best JyellowL music that’s ever been created so far, so everyone is in for an amazing hour of music.”
