JW Ridley embarks on an immersive journey inwards on new single "1990"
Newcomer JW Ridley has shared his glorious new offering "1990", a dramatic excursion into post-rock structures and balladic feelings.
The track follows motorik-stuffed Dan Carey collab "Everything (Deathless)" and sees Ridley up the emotional ante - it's led by rippling piano and warm waves of guitar, building from fragile roots into a ground-shaking climax. It's the kind of robust, maximalist songwriting that makes you sit bolt upright and pay attention.
"I wrote the song a long time ago," Ridley explains. "I kind of left it for a while because it never really felt finished with. Eventually I moved back to where I grew up for a while and it just sort of happened. Being back in that place woke up the things that I couldn’t get inside of before. So I recorded it there."
Ridley plays a free show at The Alternative Escape in Brighton on 19 May and his first headline show at London's The Waiting Room on 1 June.
