Julietta is defiant, optimistic and characterised by an air of untamed angst on “Levitate”
With dark pulsating synths that underpin crooning vocals, indie pop artist Julietta impresses with her new single “Levitate”, the title track of her newly-announced latest EP.
There's something simple yet moving about the track which lyrically explores Julietta’s both physical and emotional journey from the East to the West Coast. In an intimate reflection of her wild adolescence spent filled with spontaneity and exploration, Julietta’s move to Los Angeles exposes a period of self-reflection and the need to address her mental health.
The pink hues of nostalgic psychedelic pop and adolescent disillusionment merge to form a track bathed in the assurance that we can rise above adversity - a narrative that reads and sounds much like the plot to a nineties teen drama. “Levitate” furthers this narrative with lyrics such as "say what you want to say, I'm a million miles away from what you want me to be" exposing the desire to shed external and internal criticism and focus on personal growth.
Julietta · Levitate"'Levitate' means the world to me,” explains Julietta. “I wrote it with Jordan Topf and Sean Silverman when I moved to Los Angeles and began to shed the layers I had been carrying for my whole life. I left everything and everyone I knew behind in New York to start over. At times it was very lonely and other times exhilarating.
“'Levitate' is a song about choosing your own story and choosing what to tell people vs what they think they know about you. And above it all, understanding that at the end I’ll always be left with me myself and I - so let go of all the bullshit and hold yourself up."
Indeed, the promotion of moments of introspection and the importance of self-belief are especially poignant in light of our current global situation, and “Levitate” acts as a perfect track for a moment of optimism amongst the tumult.
