Joya Mooi celebrates friendship on feel-good new single "My Favourite"
“My Favourite”, the new single from Joya Mooi, is a heartfelt love letter to family.
Netherlands-based neo-soul artist Joya Mooi makes silky R&B that explores relationships, identity and belonging. Born to parents of South African and Dutch descent, she classically trained in jazz before carving out her own sonic space.
Mooi’s fluidity is the niche that defines her. Her effortlessly soulful voice lends power and intrigue to her often-vulnerable lyricism, and when delivered over a contemporary production, elements of jazz and lo-fi trip-hop add dynamism to her sonic palette.
“My Favourite” is an ode to family. On the record, Mooi examines her well-nurtured platonic relationships across a bouncing melody, looking inward on good times as she sings ”No need to say anything, I can already guess / This kinship is going to save, and have saved me in the past”. The accompanying video has cameos from Mooi’s close friends and band, as she finds comfort amongst their feel-good energy.
"’My Favourite’ is an ode to loving friendships, a song for the ones who are always there and show up in many ways, day or night. I wanted to create a playful track that captures the spirit of my community and celebrates my closest friends,” comments Mooi.
“Especially during these times, meaningful friendships are so essential when things get rough. I can’t thank them enough for the love and joy they bring. And it was so fun to invite my friends and my bandmates for the video we created for 'My Favourite'”.
