Joy Crookes drops video for nostalgic pop masterpiece “Sinatra”
Capturing all the grandeur of Lana Del Rey, with none of the cliché, Joy Crookes’ “Sinatra” is a masterclass in orchestral pop.
The accompanying video could not be a more appropriate visual complement, pulling together gorgeously styled shots in hazy primary colours. The aesthetic, much like Crookes’ sound, blurs the classic with the contemporary, blanketing the listener in nostalgia whilst teasing them with hints of something brand new.
“My boyfriend Lukas and I filmed it with the help of two of our friends - shoutout Karim and Yohanna! - who helped with lighting and [created] an incredible energy at weird times in the morning,” Crookes tells us. “We planned the video ourselves and what I enjoyed most was turning our ideas into visuals. We started by creating a specific lighting scheme which we felt fit the mood of the song, then came up with ideas for specific setups as we went along.”
It’s hard not to be slightly in awe of this small group of teens, with their ability to build such an atmosphere around the central hypnotic track.
