
Toronto’s Joseph of Mercury returns with the indie-pop stomp of latest single “Young Thing”
Joseph of Mercury's new effort completes a trio of rapid-fire releases in 2017, complementing the range and retro vibe of previous tracks “Without Words” and “Find You Inside”.
Unlike his most recent single, the nostalgia of "Young Thing" is not quite so blatant, with Mercury shifting from funk-toned basslines, rippling synths and killer guitar riffs to something altogether more understated. Instead we are dipped headfirst into propulsive electronica that slowly swells and abates, the track solidifying its contemporary edge before immersing fully into clattering guitars and Mercury’s falsetto coos.
Between Mercury’s signature bittersweet and emotive lyrics is a simple and sweet chorus. ‘You’re my favourite young thing,’ he reiterates over and over, as much an incantation as an obsession of a mourned, lost love before he breaks into a sudden, frenzied delirium. “Young Thing” is about “revealing the way that you first see someone,” explains Joseph of the track. “And as life challenges that naive perfection of first sight, [to find] ways to hold on and to invest in that delusion until it becomes true, while enjoying those moments where you no longer have to try and believe.”
