Arkansas duo joan embark on a new era with the triumphant "love me better"
Their first release with Photo Finish Records, “love me better” sees the synth-pop pairing doing what they do best.
Wrapping urgent melodies around retro-tinged alternative pop production, joan have spent the past year dropping a stream of consistently colourful singles. Today, they share their first track of 2020 and their first with their new label home.
“This song is the beginning of a new era for us as a band, as songwriters, and as producers” they explain and as for where it stands in their growing discography? It’s up there – “me of our favourite lines we’ve ever written, some of our favourites sounds we’ve ever created, and some of our favourite melodies we’ve ever thought of.”
Thematically, “love me better” covers the point in a relationship where things start to get one-sided, where things start to go wrong and that breaking point is coming fast and hard. joan say it’s “a song about demanding to be treated fairly in a relationship” – an ultimatum is looming, because “[you’re] giving more than you’re getting, loving more than being loved.”
With more new music due for release soon, expect more lovelorn lessons, huge choruses and explosive synth riffs as joan gear up to follow up their 2018 debut EP portra.
