Jimi Somewhere continues to redefine the rules of Scandi-pop with angsty ballad “Blue Skies”
Jimi Somewhere is the 20-year-old artist hailed as the Nordics’ answer to Kevin Abstract, and his plethora of creative influences are clear, colourful, and woven through “Blue Skies” as part of his new cinematic six-song EP Ponyboy.
Jimi Somewhere – real name Benjamin Schandy – is from a small suburban town in Norway and has been posting music online since 2017, growing a reputation for his atmospheric sound. He cites Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean as major influences, but fans will recognise elements of American pop punk, hip-hop and euphoric electro-pop woven throughout his music.
“Blue Skies” features poetic lyrics about the pain of young heartbreak (“Would you catch me if I fell in love / I’ve been afraid of moving on”) laid over a glossy melody that mixes electro-pop and hip-hop beats with eerie multi-layered vocals.
The song is accompanied by an angsty coming-of-age video, written and directed by Jimi and friend Martin Kopperud. As Jimi himself notes, “I love movies,” (he cites filmmakers Spike Jonze and Wes Anderson as influences) “and I try to write as cinematically as possible.”
