Jelly Crystal wears the spotlight well on woozy lounge track “White Lies”
A lot of music comes out of Sweden, but not a lot of it sounds like Jelly Crystal - a spotlight-dwelling soul singer whose suit swings between sharp and crumpled depending on what mood he’s occupying at any particular moment.
The latest outing for Jelly Crystal, aka Stockholm-based Filip Johnson, is his new single “White Lies”, with its woozy sense of glamour. From the slow-flowing drums to the soft twinkle in the guitars, the track is pure scene-setting. This lets Johnson’s vocal performance lead the show. And that’s where a Jelly Crystal song is at its strongest, because he’s a singer with real star power, and on “White Lies” he sells every word like it means the world to him, and should to you too.
“The basic idea for the song was to use as few elements as possible,” says Johnson. “In my head, I see people dancing closely to it at some roller ring, while people in beat-up cars parked around the ring watch them, drinking milkshakes through straws”.
