Jeida Woods lays bare his vulnerabilities on smouldering R’n’B debut single "Selfless"
With his heart masted to his sleeve, ‘Selfless’ is a relational eulogy harking back to the golden age of R’n’B. The Zambian born, Sydney-based artist explored matters of the heart - falling in love and falling apart – set to beats in his bedroom since he was 15 years-old. Now, at 20, his art has finally come to fruition.
“Selfless is a culmination of previous relationships that ended negatively.” Woods explains. “I wrote the song one cold night last winter and it took me less than 30 minutes, as it was so true to my emotions at that time. The lyrics illustrate how no one should try to force a relationship that doesn't feel natural.”
The nocturnal track is crafted to make Jeida Woods’ vocals the centrepiece: rich and full of emotion, parallels could easily be drawn between himself and the early mixtapes of The Weeknd. Having a hand on the production of "Selfless" was Lucianblomkamp, who has the distinction of working with 6lack on a wealth of his material – including on his collaborations with Khalid, Banks and T-Pain. The result is slow-burning vulnerability which carries as much weight as it does resonance.
