Jay Som’s “Baybee” is lo-fi guitar-pop euphoria
Fans of Mitski’s effervescent guitar-pop will find plenty to enjoy in the new release from San Fransisco’s Jay Som, real name Melina Duterte.
“Baybee” is the next cut to be taken from Duterte’s debut full-length as Jay Som, titled Everybody Works. The track follows 2017 releases “The Bus Song” and “1 Billion Dogs” as a continuation of her natural, conspiratorial songwriting style. Yet again, “Baybee” sees Duterte turn everyday mundanities into upbeat, shoe-gazey pop with all the flair of Courtney Barnett.
Duterte cites many influences, from The Pixies to Carly Rae Jepsen. This breadth of inspiration, combined with a scuzzy, bedroom-recorded style that’s all her own, produces something that’s effortlessly more than the sum of its parts. Listening to “Baybee”, it’s no surprise that the likes of Mitski and Japanese Breakfast have welcomed Jay Som’s support on tour.
With her debut album on the horizon, and three releases already under her belt, 2017 looks to be a year full of promise for Jay Som.
