Funk-disco and ambient pop collide on Jason Nolan’s latest offering taken from EP Late Night City Hawks. Infused with the classic pop sensibilities and modern textures, “Batu” appears to be a light hearted track from the onset but quickly becomes more pensive and reflective as one begins to decipher the lyrical content.

Written about Nolan’s time grappling depression, “Batu” expertly highlights the danger of succumbing to the dark recesses of the mind whilst simultaneously instigating an overture of optimism and hope. Nolan once again demonstrates a mastery of intelligent songwriting that reflects on deeply personal issues so that the artistic output resonates with the listener.
