London newcomer Jasmine Thompson cuts a striking silhouette on "loyal"
Both a Londoner and the child of an immigrant, 18-year-old Jasmine Thompson talks openly of the effect having feet in "two different worlds". It's clear that myraid influences feed into her dynamic, striking sound, as showcased on new single "loyal".
It's a brave, sweeping track fleshed out with orchestral instrumentation; from the brassy opening backdrop to the sweet strings of the chorus. Thompson explains the inspiration behind it, narrating the complex yet familiar trajectory of so many relationships:
"We didn’t trust each other, and as it turned out, we both had good reason. Also, he owes me £600. I’m still loyal to the person I met at the beginning, who made me really excited and gave me butterflies though.”
The song's accompanying visuals map the understated drama, communicating the same emotions through the medium of modern dance. Participants cast angular silhouettes under the crisp, abstract lines of modern architecture reminiscent of the song's sharply defined edges.
