Jake Houlsby delivers texture and tenderness on “Howl”
“Howl”, the first single from Newcastle-based singer-songwriter Jake Houlsby’s upcoming Vondelpark EP, is a deft folk-inspired track reminiscent of Ben Howard’s darker moments.
Centred around a spine-tingling combination of guitar and hummed backing vocals, “Howl” builds a simple yet effective soundscape with its understated folk instrumentation. As the track progresses, its texture becomes steadily yet subtly enriched beneath Houlsby’s tender, familiar vocal.
“Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a natural tendency to get carried away and take things too far,” Houlsby explains of the track’s instrumentation. “Sometimes I feel like I have two separate people inside of me because I go from extreme to extreme very quickly and easily. I wrote this song to myself, just as a way of trying to guide myself into the middle, sustainable ground.”
