Melbourne's jade imagine offer a bleak look at current affairs on "The News"
Punchy rhythms and cheery background vocals juxtapose the gloom on latest single “The News”, taken from jade imagine’s debut LP Basic Love, out today through Marathon Artists & Courtney Barnett’s Milk! Records.
“The News” pits refreshingly reminiscent new wave against grimly hopeless and timely lyrics to create a curiously compelling outing for the Melbourne-based artist. Jade McInally’s laidback and minimalist delivery complements the simplistic writing in a persuasive invitation to sing along and despair at the state of the world, and subsequent information overload.
“I really can’t keep up with the news. No word of a lie,” admits McInally. She describes the song as "a story about accepting the fact that the wheels will always be turning, whether you like it or not. Sometimes it makes me angry. Sometimes I can’t stay on top of it all.”
Starting off deceptively slow, the track picks up pace with a simple yet succinct beat, emphatic onomatopoeia and restlessly catchy choruses. The end result is a delightful, foot-tapping tune that's as thought-provoking as it is thoughtfully put together.
“The song wasn’t really in the mix to go onto the record at first, but Tim (Harvey, producer and guitarist) kept pushing to explore it… and it became one of the funnest and most playful to record.”
