Iris Gold strikes a rich pop vein on debut single "Goldmine"

Iris Gold has unveiled her debut single, the infectious "Goldmine".

The UK-born singer was raised on the Nordic shores of Copenhagen, squatting "above the Folkteatret (‘People’s theatre’)" and at the "autonomous fristaden (‘free town’) commune of Christiania". Dosed up on '60s and '70s counterculture, immersing herself in hand-me-down hip-hop records, and taking her hyper-liberal education and surroundings, she's gone on to craft a heady concoction of all her experiences. The first result of this is "Goldmine".

Blending '50s retro whistle-pop, crisp hip-hop beats and streamlined sonic sunbeams, "Goldmine" is a perfect introduction to summer; it's not ashamed to grin and skip through its touchpoints, and offers a wonderfully carefree contrast to the glut of grim-lipped overthinkers.

If you're fond of what she's offering and you're in London, then you're in luck: as per Damon Albarn's personal request, Gold will be supporting Blur at their British Summer Time Hyde Park show this weekend.
