Ladies and Gentlemen, Intertwine is floating in space on "My Only Lie Is Silence" [Premiere]
Following on the heels of “We Are Fools For Singing This Song”, Norwegian ambient pop experimentalist Tarjei Zakarias Ekelund, aka Intertwine, shares “My Only Lie Is Silence”, premiering today on Best Fit.
Both of Intertwine’s previous releases, “So What” and the aforementioned “We Are Fools”, were stunningly bright and fairly direct affairs. Under that poppy sheen, however, you could hear Ekelund tinkering with abstract sounds in the margins and integrating them seamlessly into the main script.
And it’s there, in the margins, that we find him on “My Only Lie Is Silence”, grasping at sounds that seem to shimmer in and out of existence. The distant, hazy horn that opens the song, the gentle piano progression that rises and falls with the rhythm of breathing, even Ekelund’s weighty voice, burdened by isolation; all of these elements feel unmoored, adrift in space and just as vulnerable to the whims of their creator as the scarecrow made of “just straws and strings” that he empathizes with.
In this sense, “My Only Lie Is Silence” is less a song and more a moment. It’s a half-remembered dream or a childhood memory fighting its way through to the frontal lobe. The artist says: "This is a song that means a lot to me, and that I'm very fond of. It is a mellow track about that strange thing called silence. Being super introverted, silence is something I'm dealing with all the time. And here I am, singing out loud about it. Surreal. I hope you like it as well.” Surreal indeed.
