Hysj continue to expand their sound on the old school rave of new single "Vingespenn"
Since their brutal and unforgiving Blokers EP, Norwegians Hysj have been adding more and more layers to their sound. The duo's new single for KOSO continues that trend with a startlingly melodic relentlesness.
On "Vingespenn" ("Wingspan") Sigrun Sæbø Åland and Kim Mikal Torp take huge Italo house keys, the Hysj trademark of unforgiving, thumping percussion, Åland's rhythmic vocals and add that rare thing in Oslo band's world - harmony and melody.
The track's bedrock is that rave piano; it's so ridiculously bouncy, a surge of positivity away from the brutalism of Blokers and when a chorus of harmonies combine with Åland's voice at the song's outro it's actually almost heavenly.
"'Vingespenn' is about restlessness and recklessnes," say Hysj. "It describes the speed required to run from your self, the euphoria that define the fleeting moments when you succeed, and the inevitable disappointment when reality finally catches up."
Let's hope Hysj continue to outrun reality for a little while longer.
