Hurray For The Riff Raff forges her own path with "The Navigator"
With her cinematic new album imminent, Alynda Segarra - a.k.a. Hurray For The Riff Raff - has shared the title track along with an accompanying teaser video.
A concept album written about a fictional street kid Navita Milagros Negrón who finds herself at a crossroads of identity and ancestral weight, The Navigator is an album that resounds with a confusion and determination wholly befitting of the world we find ourselves in today.
Title track "The Navigator" is the song of that character. “This girl who grows up in a city that’s like New York, who’s a street kid, like me when I was little, has a special place in the history of her people,” Segarra illustrates of her inspiration.
A gentle fire burns through the songs core, melodies surging with a tightly honed sense of power, flooding the narrative - and in turn, the listener - with a very real sense of purpose. Echoing strings and clanging percussion forge a rich tapestry, giving voice to questions that won't remain unanswered, and inviting you to do the same.
"The Navigator has arrived," Segarra declares. "Our street kid heroine is on a mission to ask the powers that be what the plan is for her people. The people of color who are being forced out and demonized. Where will they go? Where will they live?"
"We need thousands of Navigators to take the reins of history and steer us towards justice for all people," the musician affirms. "The track we are on must change."
