Hundreds, the Hamburg, Germany sibling duo of Eva and Philipp Milner, had traded in a mélange of ambient and pulsing electro – akin, at times, to Bjork – on previous outings. Their latest single, “Circus”, the first from their upcoming album, Aftermath, is a complete flip of that style, coming across downright folksy.
Accompanied by merely a thumping tom and a sleepy guitar shuffle, Eva’s vocals are clear as crystal. Come the bridge and chorus, and the song’s petals truly open up as the slightest bit of brass creeps in, adding a touch of the baroque. The production is cozy and inviting, much like the wood fire in the comfy log cabin setting of the video. When Eva croons, “let me go/ go, go”, seemingly directed at the grinding rat race of life, she conveys herself so sweetly the only letting go of her you really want to do is give her a spin across that hardwood floor.
Hundreds will be touring across Germany later this month through early May. Aftermath is out 27 May on Sinnbus.
