Croon-poppers Honey Moon argue the rapture of the everyday on new track "Magic"
Intermixed with Honey Moon's trademark doo-wop comes a more multifarious sound and a sprinkling of old school Hollywood decadence on "Magic".
Whereas Honey Moon's last single "If I Could Only Dream" was hazy and lackadaisical; "Magic" is plucky and vivacious, and follows the failsafe every-great-pop-song-must-have-one addition of a bracing key change (reports of them standing up for said key change à la Westlife are as yet unconfirmed). Frontman Jack Slater Chandler’s graceful vocal is offset with elegantly suffused strings and divergent drums.
Bassist and backing vocalist Joey Julliard explains that "we had more time in the studio this time round and we wanted to push some boundaries. We wanted to go bigger and more cinematic". And that they did.
"The last record was a British gangster film on a modest budget with a snappy script," says Juillard. "Magic's a Hollywood blockbuster and the middle eight’s the car chase with ten explosions." Although "Magic" is an atypical love story in how it tries to dispel the idea that finding one true love is unrealistic.
"What can seem like the most mundane, everyday elements of companionship are often the most important and overlooked. This sort of souped-up version of having "one true love" is, whilst a nice idea, pretty difficult to imagine as anything that’s realistically achievable, but there’s something very real in the sentiment and that’s the "spell", that’s the ‘"llusion"," says Chandler.
