Henry Green premieres stunning Slow EP at Best Fit
There can be little doubt that collaborations, remixes, toplines all help towards an artist’s reach. With so many underground music enthusiasts living in the world of the Hype Machine and YouTube channels mblazoned with suggestive photography, bootlegs and covers often rule supreme. Henry Green can vouch for that.
Norwegian production sensation Kygo took Green’s already inspired take on MGMT’s “Electric Feel” and adorned it with his now trademark washed-out, summer-fused, chillwave elements; almost 6 million Soundcloud streams later and the previously unknown teenager had arrived.
With this exposure comes a certain amount of pressure though. A cover, followed by a remix of a cover starts to beg the question of individual, original talent. Luckily any of these concerns get immediately, thoroughly and beautifully dispelled within a moment of the Slow EP.
We were first taken by the somewhat enigmatic songwriter back in early 2013 and over two years later we were equally enamoured with stunning “Barcelona”, which signalled at the fragile eloquence to come. Sure enough, the extended player’s title track confirmed our suspicions, with Green’s stunning, hushed vocal leading the way above careful, loungey guitar-dominated production that feels something like a more delicate SOHN and aligns him with fellow head-turning newcomers Aquilo.
Today, fans of the young troubadour get to complete the set, as Slow - released by the tastemaking London label Akira (Phoria, Still Parade, Shura) today - premieres here at Best Fit; thanks Kygo, I’ll take it from here.
Henry Green plays Bristol's Grain Barge on Friday 5 June and The Islington in London on Wednesday 17.
