Hein Cooper's newest cut "Rusty" is indie-pop bliss with a twist
2016 is slotted to be a big year for indie-pop/acoustic artist Hein Cooper. His debut album The Art of Escape, due out 1 April via Indica Records, acts as a well paced follow-up to the 2015 release of Cooper's debut EP.
Both offerings were recorded and produced in Montreal, Canada with Marcus Paquin (Local Natives, Arcade Fire, The National), hence the existence of a well-rounded tune like "Rusty".
The track is laced with Cooper's catchy vocals, poppy percussion and the bursting energy of each and every strum of his acoustic guitar. On the topic, Hein notes that like on "Rusty", the "sound of the record is definitely reflective of where I am now". That place that Cooper speaks of is a creative environment of growth, as he started with folk music, but now finds himself beginning to explore "other styles and feelings". The Art of Escape in its entirety is indicative of that progression.
With "Rusty" in particular, Cooper found himself struggling to understand the human tendency to bury emotions and "glue a sense of happiness to themselves rather than confront the way they actually feel". That explains why hopeful instrumentation paired with the melancholic nature of the lyrical content work so well in tandem.
Cooper will start 2016 on the road in Australia, before heading back to Canada for shows in the lead up to the album’s release.
