The Voice semi-finalist Heather Jayne unleashes retro-tinged revenge anthem "Shadows"
Heather Jayne benefitted from the mentorship from Boy George and Paloma Faith on The Voice, but her new single "Shadows" is far cooler than the average talent show contestant output.
"Shadows" is a malevolent little pop cut with a throbbing, retro-tinged synth heart and needle-sharp guitar lines. Staccato electronic handclaps drive the track forwards with building urgency towards a taughtly-wound chorus. Heather Jayne's neat execution of her vision – injecting a creeping darkness into a dance-worthy pop song structure – creates a haunting, memorable release to chill even the sunniest of summer days.
"'Shadows' is written from the perspective of a group of people who want revenge on someone who wronged them," Heather Jayne explains. "It's written almost like how animals hunt each other - from the id that they all have. It's a personification of the little bit of darkness inside everyone which is never actioned, but people sometimes think about enacting."
2018 has been a busy year for Heather Jayne, with four singles under her belt already. Debut release "The Power" embodies the same ghostly sonic space as "Shadows", whilst "Better Than This" delves into the minimal, R&B-inspired synth-pop vibe dominating the charts right now. From these snapshots alone, it seems Heather Jayne is a singer/songwriter more than able to show her admirable versatility whilst constructing a memorable signature atmosphere.
