HANYA unveil the rose-tinted uncertainty of entrancing new cut “Texas”
Following on from this year’s EP Sea Shoes, Brighton shoegaze band HANYA examine the honeymoon phase of love in new single “Texas”.
Following on from their 2018 debut EP I Used To Love You, Now I Don’t and this year’s acclaimed follow-up collection Sea Shoes, Brighton band HANYA are back with their all-consuming, addictive offering “Texas”. Diving deeper into their eclectic and celestial sounds, the genre-defining new single is drenched in sublime shoegaze while still allowing for emotive and thought-provoking storytelling.
The serene vocals of Heather Sheret perfectly compliment the laidback pace of the track, while holding enough presence to bring “Texas” to life. Meanwhile, the instrumentation feels wholly hypnotic thanks to the intoxicating, dizzying riffs of guitarist Benjamin Varnes that perfectly intertwine with the bass of Dylan Fanger and the drums of Jack Watkins; alongside Sheret’s vocals, their collective elements are almost serendipitous.
HANYA · TEXAS“‘Texas’ was entirely written and recorded during lockdown, testing ourselves to work remotely as a group,” share HANYA. “The track explores the feeling of wanting to run away with someone when you first meet them.”
“Humans are so damn nervous… the anxiety that follows unpredictability has always fascinated me,” Sheret adds. “I wanted to examine this uncertainty, as I was talking to a friend about having ‘the chat’ with someone she was seeing. We all know that feeling… waking up feeling sick, projecting hypotheticals that feel like the world is caving in on you, it’s the worst/best time at the start of a relationship. With these thoughts came the lyrics and melody for ‘Texas’.
“Starting with ‘If there were a hurricane, and I died, I went to heaven, would you be surprised’, I wanted to explore the desire to get to know someone entirely, to ask them every question under the sun and examine them in context,” she continues. “To offer them these hypotheticals and see how they react, to have ‘the chat’ after the starting’s of a relationship - the head-over-heels uncertainty, the self-doubt, and the desire to know each other entirely.”
