Bergen's Great News unveil sparkling and dreamy new single "Diamonds"
Home to such acts as AURORA, Kings of Convenience and Royksopp it seems Bergen is one of the best cities for discovering new music. Great News are keeping up that strong tradition.
Made up of Even Kjelby (guitar, vocals) Ole Einarsen (bass) and Lars Platou (drums) and only formed in March 2015, this Norwegian trio has already played a number of sold-out shows - their express intention for forming a band - and have opened for the likes of Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
"Diamonds" is Great News' third single following debut "The Blind" and second effort "Love Her", and it's clear to see early on that the band is keen on big choruses, and unafraid of a guitar jangle that had nods to the likes of Real Estate and Orange Juice. The band describes the sound of their latest track as "... feeling of slipping on ice. You can’t fight it, you have to accept that you’re losing control. It’s also like watching the world through a diamond. You’ll se many sides of the same reality, and you’ll be seduced by the illusion."
For us, "Diamonds" is pitched perfectly between the more low-key "The Blind" and the effervescent "Love Her"; the verses are made languid and lazy through guitar twang and Kjelby's falsetto before the bright blast of a chorus lights up like sunlight on snow, blindingly wonderful.
Great News will be touring in 2016 and should be one of the star turns at Oslo's by:Larm festival in March.
